In recent years, NCTM published Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics to examine how we are teaching high school math. Our students need to learn to be problem solvers and critical thinkers rather than just knowing the math content. We need to pose tasks to our students that promote critical thinking.

In this workshop, we will do the following:

  • Engage in lesson design that creates a problem solving and critical thinking culture in the classroom
  • Explore how surface, deep, and transfer learning play critical roles in engaging students in mathematics
  • Explore how the 8 Mathematical Teaching Practices play an important role in motivating our students and engage them in rich mathematics
